The brief was simple: build something that feels unmistakably South African. No flat-pack. No imported timber. Everything from the slab up.
Duncan sourced the hardwood from the De Jager saw mill in Northmead, Benoni — hand-selected for grain, density and character. The centrepiece is a live edge bar counter crafted from a single slab, set on a brick-and-stone plinth and sealed with a hand-polished epoxy finish that protects the raw edge while letting the wood's natural character show through.
The shelving units that line the walls were custom-built to spec — dark-finished to contrast the warm timber tones and create that moody, atmospheric feel the client was after. Every joint, every edge, every finish decision was made by hand.
